“Cleopatra: A Life” by Stacy Schiff. I have a soft spot for strong women in history. I’ve written about Hypatia, the Lady Philosopher of Alexandria; Empress Galla Placidia and her niece Pulcheria who both ruled Rome in its waning days. I’ve read about Boudica, Queen of the Iceni; Amanirenas, the one-eyed warrior queen of Kush; and Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra; all of whom .   Cleopatra eventually followed Caesar back to Rome, but returned to Egypt in 44 B.C., following his assassination. I had never read much on Cleopatra, which is surprising because since childhood I have read extensively on Ancient Greece and Egypt, but never more than touched on the subject of Cleopatra, so my prior knowledge of her was the legend, ie.

the seduction of Julius Caesar, a life of sumptuous life /5(6). Bestselling novelist Margaret George brings to life the glittering kingdom of Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, in this lush, sweeping, and richly detailed saga.

When, at the Battle of Philippi in 42 bce, Caesar’s assassins were routed, Mark Antony became the heir apparent of Caesar’s authority—or so it seemed, for Caesar’s great-nephew and personal heir, Octavian, was but a sickly boy.
